Curl Talk: Custom Curl Cocktail

October 19, 2020

First thing’s first- you need to understand what makes your curl do what it does (or doesn’t). This is called your curl pattern. Think of it like your hair’s fingerprint. It is your DNA- it makes your curls your curls. And the truth is, no two curl patterns are the same. That’s why your favorite beauty influencer’s hair routine makes her look like Julia Roberts stepping out of a 1990’s rom-com, and why it left yours, well, not so much. Which brings us to the good news and bad news. The bad news? That routine is not for you. The good news?  There will be one that is, all you have to do is create it. And in order to do that, you have to start working with your hair, not against it.

Finding the “perfect” solution takes time. It is equal parts trial and error. The best piece of advice we can offer is this: when it comes to managing your curls, you must first identify your main concern. Are your curls dry? Is your hair frizzy? Maybe it’s lacking moisture, or you just cannot, for the life of you, control those unruly locks. Most likely, there isn’t simply one challenge. There are probably a few (which is totally normal BTW). This is why we suggest concocting the “perfect” Curl Cocktail. Meaning, figuring out the right solution for you- whether it’s products or styling methods. A customized curl cocktail will look different for everyone. And, did you know? It’s OK to use multiple products (especially when the ingredients are non-toxic). In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find one single product that could fix every hair concern (but, if you find one- let us know). It’s also OK to mix between brands and product type (mousse, cremes, gels, serums etc.) to get the perfect solution for you. Remember, when it comes to personalizing a routine, there is no right or wrong- there is simply what works for you.

Knowing that, the next step in taking control of your curl is to have a proper Consultation with a Curl Expert. Having someone who knows curls make their own observation and assessment can be super helpful. They will most likely provide a different perspective or solution and offer good insight to help inform your decision-making when creating your Curl Cocktail.

To demonstrate, we had our Curl Expert, Adrienne, perform a Curl Consultation on Beatrice. After listening to Beatrice express concerns regarding dryness, Adrienne was able to create a solution she and Beatrice felt was best.  She started by using R+Co Atlantis Shampoo and treatment. The moisturizing line is perfect for rehydrating the hair and would help with one of Beatrice’s main curl concerns: dryness. Next, Adrienne decided to use the Iles Formula Curl Revive Serum. She loves this product because it is pH balanced to protect hair against heated tools + UV, and color exposure + humidity- the perfect curl-prep-product. Once she’s prepped the hair, she’s ready to style. She went straight for the R+Co Turntable Curl Crème. The lightweight formula is designed to nourish and shape without weighing the hair down or creating an undesired crunch. Not only will this help with hydration, but it will also give Beatrice the opportunity to gain some control over her curl.

The final styling step is to diffuse the hair. Diffusers are ideal tools for people with wavy or curly hair because it distributes heat to a wider surface area more gently as opposed to applying heat directly to one area. This avoids creating dry and frizzy hair and disturbing the curls. The ideal setting is to have it on low heat high air to really protect your hair from any unnecessary heat damage. Once you’ve diffused your hair, you’re ready to go!

Remember, when it comes to curly hair, there is no one-size-fits-all. True Hair Happiness is created once you figure out what works best for you. And, understanding that it can take time and will most likely be a multi-step process. From identifying challenges, having a consultation, choosing appropriate products, to finding the right style, it’s all a part of the curly journey. It’s almost as if it’s a rite of passage to achieving those luscious curly locks we all strive for. Stay patient. Remain calm. You’ve got this.

Creating a Curl Cocktail that works for you? Now that’s what we call Curly Happiness.
